about

The Irish song 'A Bunch of Thyme' dates back to at least the 17th century. It warns young women to hang on to their virtue in the face of lusty sailors and such. It was brought over to America and New Orleans in particular in the 1800's and morphed into 'Careless Love', with the same melody and similar lyrical content. 'Careless Love' was a centerpiece of Buddy Bolden's repertoire. Bessie Smith, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Dr. John, Bob Dylan, Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash - and many, many others recorded and played it.

Meanwhile the song continued to be played in Ireland as 'A Bunch Of Thyme' and an Irish duo by the name of Foster and Allen had a big hit with it in the early 1980's.

This version, a preview track from the forthcoming album 'Black Coddle' completes the circle and brings the New Orleans jazz standard back to it's Irish roots #reclaimingmythyme

lyrics

Come all you maidens young and fair
All you that are blooming in your prime
Always beware and keep your garden fair
Let no man steal away your thyme

For thyme it is a precious thing
And thyme brings all things to my mind
Thyme with all its flavours along with all its charms
Thyme brings all things to my mind

Once I had a bunch of thyme
I thought it never would decay
Then a lusty sailor who happened to pass along
He stole my bunch of thyme away

The sailor gave to me a rose
A rose that never would decay
He gave it to me to keep me reminded
Of when he stole my thyme away

Come all you maidens young and fair
All you that are blooming in your prime
Always beware and keep your garden fair
Let no man steal
Let no man steal
Let no man steal
Away your thyme
