In Liguria they sing from the balconies Arias that set the spirit free Stars that tremble with love and hope And melodies so sweet they'd scandalize the Pope Down in Canon Mooney Garden flats With white suits and gloves and N95 masks They're calling numbers through an old P.A. In the bitter Ringsend cold on a dreary Dublin day They say: Two fat ladies 88 Lucky 7, red raw and garden gate Legs 11 and goodbye teens Doctors orders, one dozen, dancing queen When you have nowhere to go Play some Ringsend Balcony Bingo Cross over the Samuel Beckett Bridge Down Sir John Rogerson's quay to Pembroke Cottages Past St. Patricks and down by Fluffy Mutts Where the sound of bingo calls stops them all from going nuts Mrs. Duggan with her hair so blue And a pit bull/ whippet mix that looks like a kangaroo And the kids going spare from being stuck inside And the swings on the South Lotts playground, motionless and quiet Two fat ladies etc...

about

Anywhere But Home, the new album from Eamonn Flynn, is a musical love letter to his native Dublin. The singer-songwriter and keyboardist (The Commitments soundtrack, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Evelyn 'Champagne' King, Elvin Bishop, Maria Muldaur) wrote the nine songs from his home in San Francisco during the pandemic, when travel back to Ireland was impossible. The album came out on February 25, 2022 on his own Anam label.

The album, Flynn's third, is rooted in Irish music along with influences from other styles he’s played through the years. He's joined by some of Irish music's leading instrumentalists—Athena Tergis, John Doyle and Mick McAuley (Solas), Mike McGoldrick (Lúnasa, Mark Knopfler), Todd Denman, James Macintosh (Shooglenifty), and James Blennerhassett (Paul Brady, Mary Black), as well as Grammy-winning Bay Area drummer Brian Collier (Santana, Ledesi, Lalah Hathaway).

"Immensely skilled, Flynn has an ear for voicing, for bringing out the depths of beauty of the piano," says HD Music and those depths are readily apparent on this album.

Irish Music Magazine described his songwriting as "moving with true emotional register across history, folklore and poetry...a (literal) gritty quality...evoking triumph over poverty...with true Dublin savvy."

ANYWHERE BUT HOME’s album cover is a photo of what remains of The Manhattan Cafe, a much-beloved late-night eatery for Dubliners indulging in a night of revelry or musicians after a gig. Photo is by Ruth Gallagher.
